The Columbia Greenway Rail Trail stands out in Western Massachusetts as a high-quality shared use pathway in Westfield.
Extending 3.1 miles from the Westfield River to the Southwick city line, the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail is a spine in Westfield’s active transportation network.
One of the only elevated urban rail trails in the United States, the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail follows the former New York/New Haven/Hartford Railroad, weaving its way through downtown Westfield and surrounding neighborhoods before crossing farmland and ending at the Southwick city line. The path continues into Southwick and extends as far south as New Haven, Connecticut as part of the larger New Haven & Northampton Canal Greenway.
The Columbia Greenway Rail Trail is an amazing place to explore the city of Westfield and its history while enjoying the outdoors. Along the way are several historical markers that tell the story of the city's past, including the trail’s namesake, the Columbia Manufacturing Company, and of the trail itself, which has served as a transportation corridor for nearly 200 years.
From the trail, you can get to some of Westfield’s most popular destinations, including the Westfield River Esplanade, Westfield State University, Stanley Park, and the vibrant shops and restaurants that make up downtown Westfield. Check out our interactive map and plan out your next ride!
